New details have emerged about the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, who died Sunday at age 36, according to reports cited by ABC News and TMZ. The New York Post reported that 911 dispatch audio captured an unidentified friend calling from a Greenville, South Carolina, apartment at 1:51 p.m. Sunday to report an “unresponsive female” in “cardiac arrest.” The caller was described by a spokesperson as an acquaintance of Panettiere. The report also said Panettiere and her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, had flown from Los Angeles to South Carolina on Saturday, though it was not clear whether he placed the emergency call.
Dispatch Audio Cites CPR and Overdose
The dispatch audio obtained by the Post included a paramedic saying Panettiere had suffered an overdose, while CPR was in progress. Responding paramedics attempted to save her with CPR and “advanced cardiac life support.” TMZ reported that the advanced care included special medicines, breathing tubes, and heart rhythm monitoring. Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. Officials have not released a final cause of death, and an autopsy was expected to be carried out Monday.
No Foul Play Reported So Far
A spokesperson said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE that the preliminary investigation had not found signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. “The preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances,” the spokesperson said. “An acquaintance of Ms. Panettiere placed the 911 call.” The official autopsy is expected to provide more information, but at this stage authorities have not announced a final determination on what led to her death.
A Career Many Viewers Grew Up Watching
Panettiere was known to many viewers for her roles in “Nashville” and “Heroes,” and for playing a young role in the 2000 film “Remember the Titans” when she was 10 years old. She had previously spoken publicly about struggles with alcoholism and postpartum depression. Her younger brother, Jensen Panettiere, died in 2023 at age 28 from an undiagnosed heart condition. Panettiere is survived by her young daughter, whom she shared with her ex-fiancé, boxer Wladimir Klitschko.
