Trump Calls on Europe to Cut Ties with Russian Oil

President Trump didn’t hold back on Thursday. He urged European leaders to stop buying Russian oil. Why? Because it fuels Moscow’s war against Ukraine, according to a White House official.

Trump joined a call with European leaders, led by French President Emmanuel Macron. They were discussing security guarantees for Ukraine if a peace deal with Russia happens. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was on the line too.

“President Macron and European leaders called President Trump into their ’Coalition of the Willing’ meeting. President Trump emphasized that Europe must stop purchasing Russian oil that is funding the war, as Russia received 1.1 billion euros in fuel sales from the EU in one year,” the official said.

He didn’t stop there. “The president also emphasized that European leaders must place economic pressure on China for funding Russia’s war efforts,” the official added.

Now, here’s the kicker: the EU, in partnership with the U.S., has slapped severe sanctions on Moscow. Yet, they still imported a staggering $41.9 billion in goods from Russia last year, according to Eurostat.

Before the war, Russia was the top supplier of petroleum to the EU. Sure, Europe has cut back on Russian oil since the invasion in February 2022, but they’re still sinking billions into oil products from Russia.
