Taking Back Our Strategic Advantage
Remember when America wasn’t scared to defend its own interests? There was a time we didn’t back down from protecting what’s ours. These days, it often looks like we’re letting foreign powers, especially Communist China, work their way into our backyard. The Panama Canal—a true symbol of American ingenuity—is one such asset slipping into enemy hands.
This week in Panama, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a bold statement. Standing at a brand new American-financed pier, he signaled a major shift. His message is clear: it’s time to act and stand tall for our country.
From ‘The Hill’:
“The United States and Panama will work together to take back the Panama Canal from ‘China’s influence,’” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Tuesday while standing in front of the vital shipping lane. “China did not build this canal. China does not operate this canal and China will not weaponize this canal,” Hegseth said from the pier.
This is real leadership. No more empty threats or endless talks—just direct, powerful action to keep American interests safe.
China’s creeping influence isn’t new. For years, they’ve been installing what Hegseth called “critical infrastructure” in the canal zone. Under soft policies like those of the Biden administration, Chinese influence was practically welcomed. But that era is ending.
The Panama Canal isn’t just a waterway—it’s an economic lifeline. Around $270 billion in American goods moves through that chokepoint each year. When shipping costs rise, it’s your wallet that pays. Delays mean empty shelves at your local store, and any Chinese surveillance just puts our security at risk.
Under the America First banner, this decisive move in Panama is exactly what we need. It’s all about smart diplomacy backed by economic and military strength. Protecting American jobs, products, and values isn’t optional—it’s essential.
For too long, we’ve seen our strategic assets slip away. The United States built this canal over a century ago, only to let control pass entirely to Panama back in 1999. That’s not how we roll. President Trump was clear in his March congressional address when he said, “to further enhance our national security, my administration will be reclaiming the Panama Canal, and we’ve already started doing it.”
Sure, there are critics who call this move aggressive. But bold steps are needed when national security is on the line. The recent sale of two major ports along the canal to an American-led investment group is another win for putting America first. As Hegseth put it, “Together with Panama in the lead, we will keep the canal secure and available for all nations.”
America isn’t done yet. With renewed determination and a clear focus on our interests, we’re ready to stand up for our backyard and reclaim our rightful place. This is the kind of leadership that makes all the difference for our nation’s future.
