The stop that raised eyebrows
A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper pulled over a 2020 Kenworth tractor-trailer for a traffic violation on US 281 near George West. The trooper noticed signs of possible criminal activity and called for backup. Live Oak County sheriff deputies and a K9 team joined the stop. What began as a routine enforcement action turned into a larger investigation once the dog gave a positive alert.
What officers uncovered
Agents found 479 bundles wrapped in black tape hidden inside a false floor compartment beneath the trailer. The total weight was about 1,980 pounds. Authorities estimate the street value at roughly $3.4 million. Hiding drugs in cunning compartments is an old trick, but it still trips up drivers and enforcement when someone is paying attention.
The driver and the charges
The driver, identified as a 32-year-old man from Alton, Texas, was arrested and booked into the Live Oak County Jail. He faces possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Because the amount seized far exceeds 400 grams, prosecutors classify the offense as a first degree felony. That carries serious penalties and sets up a long court process.
Where the shipment was headed
State officers say the load was bound for Dallas. Smugglers often use commercial vehicles to move large quantities to big cities. That makes trucks convenient cover and creates a bigger enforcement challenge. This bust shows routine traffic enforcement can disrupt organized distribution networks if troopers are alert and procedures work.
Operation Lone Star and border arrests
Officials pointed to Operation Lone Star as part of the broader effort that led to the seizure. In related activity, DPS teams working with Border Patrol reported apprehending several migrants and charging a 17-year-old alleged human smuggler. Authorities say cartels sometimes use colored wrist bands to track payments and movement. The two drug and border actions do not prove a single organized route, but they do illustrate overlapping smuggling risks the state is tracking.
