38 Days and Counting: Schumer’s Shutdown Standoff
It’s day 38 of what’s now known as the Schumer Shutdown. The drama unfolds with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer leading the charge for the Democrats. Their aim? To deliver taxpayer-funded healthcare to illegal aliens and extend Obamacare subsidies, before reopening the government.
This Friday, Schumer’s plan went public on the Senate floor. He called for a one-year extension of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. His pitch? It’s a move to tackle rising healthcare costs.
Schumer stated, “Democrats are ready to clear the way to quickly pass a government funding bill that includes health care affordability.” He’s asking for a clean one-year extension of those tax credits to the Continuing Resolution (CR) as a starting point. Bold, right?
Yet, Senate Majority Leader John Thune isn’t biting. Standing firm, Thune dismisses the proposed Obamacare expansion. His message is clear: “Cracks are forming. After 38 days, Democrats abandon their original and equally unserious proposal. Extending the COVID bonuses is the negotiation — something that can only take place after the government reopens. Release the hostage. End the pain,” said Thune’s office.
And let’s not forget President Trump’s input. He’s calling for Republicans to pull the filibuster plug. A high-stakes chess game in full swing, it seems.
