Salt Lake City police response near an alley after a violent attack

Salt Lake Alley Attack Leaves Woman Critical

What police say happened

Salt Lake City police say officers were called to an alley near 2525 South 500 East after a woman was heard crying. When they arrived, they found her bleeding with a deep cut along her neck. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The suspect, 30-year-old Jesus Alejandro Ramirez-Padilla, was booked on attempted murder and aggravated assault. According to court documents, he told investigators he had thoughts of killing someone before the attack. That is not exactly the kind of planning that improves a neighborhood.

Video helped officers close in

Police used a nearby homeowner camera to help identify the suspect. The footage allegedly showed two people walking in the area, then Ramirez-Padilla fleeing while the victim struggled to stand. Officers later found him with blood on his pants and hands, which is often a strong clue that the day has gone badly. During an interview, he reportedly admitted strangling the woman and slashing her throat several times. He also said drugs had left him in an altered state and claimed he was trying to put her out of her misery. That explanation belongs in the long museum of excuses nobody asked for.

The paperwork problem is still there

Reports say Ramirez-Padilla had no U.S. identifying documents when he was arrested, and his immigration status was not immediately clear. That leaves the usual trail of agencies, questions, and public statements that show up after the damage is done. Border Hawk said it was waiting for a response from the Department of Homeland Security. For now, the case is in Salt Lake County Jail and in the court system, where the paperwork will move at its own proud pace.
