Chris Murphy speaking on television after posting about Trump and Iran

Murphy’s Biden Praise Bites Back

Murphy Goes After Trump

Sen. Chris Murphy used Easter Sunday to attack President Trump after Trump posted a provocative message about Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. Murphy said the post was so extreme that Trump’s Cabinet should look into the 25th Amendment, which is one way to sound alarmed while also handing out constitutional advice like it came from a drive-through window. The fight quickly shifted from foreign policy to mental fitness, with Murphy claiming Trump was “completely, utterly unhinged.” That sort of language is common in Washington, where every crisis is treated like a cable news audition and every hot take is sold as civic duty.

The Biden Clip Came Back

Then came the reminder that made Murphy’s post age badly in real time. A clip from February 2024 resurfaced showing Murphy on Meet the Press praising Joe Biden as “incredibly competent” and “incredibly effective.” He also said he had worked closely with the president and had seen his effectiveness up close. That comment aged about as well as a carton of milk left on a campaign bus. By late spring 2024, Biden’s debate performance had made the White House spin machine earn its paycheck, and he was pushed out of the race soon after. The point is not that politicians change their minds. That happens. The point is that many of them only discover honesty after the audience has already noticed the script.

Why The Clip Landed

Murphy’s problem is bigger than one bad quote. It is the modern habit of treating serious warnings like theater and then acting surprised when someone rolls the tape. Voters have watched too many leaders defend the party line until the polling turns, then rediscover concern with astonishing speed. That is why the resurfaced Biden clip hit so hard. It did not just embarrass one senator. It reminded people that political panic often arrives on cue, usually after the consultants approve the lighting. In Washington, consistency is optional, but the outrage has to be camera-ready.
