Senate votes to confirm Markwayne Mullin as Homeland Security secretary

Mullin Wins Senate’s DHS Vote

Senate Clears Mullin

The Senate voted 54-45 on Monday to confirm Markwayne Mullin as the next secretary of Homeland Security. Rand Paul was the only Republican to vote no. Democrats John Fetterman and Martin Heinrich voted yes, while Ruben Gallego did not vote. In a town that turns nearly everything into a ritual, even a confirmation vote can feel like a small stage play with better lighting and worse hair.

Cheers Break Out On The Floor

After the vote, cheers broke out in the chamber. Sen. Lankford announced that the nomination was confirmed and said the president would be told right away. The public got the usual Washington souvenir package too, with cameras rolling and everyone acting as if a procedural vote were a championship win. Here are the clips shared from the floor:

Trump’s Choice Moves Into DHS

President Trump announced earlier this month that Mullin would replace Kristi Noem at DHS. Mullin said he was grateful for the nomination and said he wanted to work with the department’s agencies and the thousands of employees who handle border security, disaster response, and other homeland duties. He also linked the job to Trump’s promise of law and order and a tighter border. The department now gets another new boss, and the public gets to see whether the mission changes or just the memo headers.
