Bomb squad response at Fort Washington Park in Maryland

More Devices Found in Maryland Park

More Devices Turn Up

Officials in Prince George’s County say five explosive devices were found at Fort Washington Park on Sunday after crews were called to check two suspicious packages in the woods. The county fire department’s bomb squad rendered the first devices safe before sunset, then returned the next morning after more devices were found in the same park. Because apparently one round of danger was not enough, the scene stayed active while crews worked through the remote area and secured the site.

What Investigators Said

The Prince George’s County Fire Department said additional devices were discovered after operations paused for the night. The ATF said the objects will be taken to its National Laboratory Center for testing, and officials noted the devices do not appear to have been placed there recently. That detail matters, though it also raises the usual question: who leaves explosive devices in a park and why was it still sitting there like forgotten luggage? The answer should come from investigators, not from guesses dressed up as certainty.

Park Remains Closed

The National Park Service says Fort Washington Park is closed until further notice, which is the correct response when the words “suspected pipe bombs” enter the chat. ABC 7 News reported that crews found more devices in a remote section of the park, but officials did not give an exact number. The only thing less helpful than a live bomb scare is vague public communication, though at least this one comes with bomb squad teams instead of a soothing press release and a shrug.
