While Trump was discussing foreign affairs, a reporter asked about his recent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and if he planned to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin next. Trump seemed to miss the question, but Melania stepped in to help.

Since Trump returned to the White House in January, Melania has kept her focus on her main goals from the first term: fighting human trafficking and helping underprivileged children.

In the fiscal year 2026 budget, Melania’s “Be Best” initiative secured $25 million to provide housing and support for youth aging out of foster care. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development allocated these funds to mark the initiative’s seven-year anniversary.

“I am proud to have successfully secured $25 million to provide housing for individuals aging out of foster care. This is another essential measure that ensures the safety, welfare, and autonomy of those in the foster community,” the First Lady said. “Secretary Scott Turner’s commitment will provide thousands of youth transitioning out of the foster care system with dedicated rental assistance and other supportive services to promote stability and self-sufficiency.”

Melania also spoke out about the recent mass shooting in Minneapolis, where a transgender-identifying gunman killed two children and injured several others during mass. “The tragic mass killing in Minnesota illuminates the need for pre-emptive intervention in identifying potential school shooters. Early warning signs are often evident, with many individuals exhibiting concerning behaviors and making violent threats online prior to their actions,” she stated.

“To prevent future tragedies, it is crucial we look into behavioral threat assessments across all levels of society—beginning in our homes, extending through school districts and of course, social media platforms. Being aware of these warning signs and acting quickly can save lives and make American communities safer,” she added.
