Waffle Master Hakeem Jeffries Finally Endorses Mamdani, GOP Quickly Fires Off Blistering Response
- Jeffries finally endorsed Zohran Mamdani, but it was clearly reluctant.
- The GOP seized the moment and framed Mamdani as radical and dangerous.
- NRCC will run hard-hitting ads tying Democrats to socialism.
- Polls still show Mamdani leading, but Republicans are turning up the heat.
After months of ducking the question, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) finally threw his weight behind democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor. The endorsement feels more like damage control than leadership, given mounting concerns about Mamdani’s stance toward police, his refusal to condemn the loaded phrase “globalize the intifada,” and his appearance with an unindicted co-conspirator tied to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Those are not small controversies, and Democrats are scrambling to manage them.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been conspicuously quiet on Mamdani, while Gov. Kathy Hochul has already offered her backing and Mayor Eric Adams moved to endorse Andrew Cuomo instead. The split in high-profile endorsements makes clear that Democrats are not unified, even as they warn about the threat from the right. Republicans smell weakness and are sharpening their attacks.
It’s almost surreal to see Cuomo painted as the safer option, but that’s where we are as the field fragments and Republican Curtis Sliwa languishes in a distant third place. Jeffries finally announced his pick, and outlets called the statement lukewarm.
Jeffries finally made his decision, but true to form, his endorsement was described as lukewarm:
The Brooklyn congressman endorsed the Democratic mayoral front-runner in a lukewarm statement to the New York Times that noted he has “areas of principled disagreement” with the socialist.
Still, Jeffries lauded Mamdani’s focus on “affordability” during the campaign and argued there was a need for the Democratic Party to unite in the face of an “existential” threat from President Trump.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was less than impressed:
Johnson’s tweet continued:
Meanwhile, Republicans are fighting to lower costs, make streets safer, secure our border, and deliver peace through strength. The contrast has never been more clear.
Marxist Zohran Mamdani’s extreme agenda is the future of the Democrat Party— but we will NOT allow it to be the future of America.
