Israel Levels Another Gaza High-Rise as Evacuations Grow
Israel knocked down another Gaza City high-rise Saturday morning. The military said Hamas was using the building. Thousands more Palestinians fled the area as airstrikes picked up pace.
Saturday’s strike came soon after the Israeli Defense Forces dropped leaflets over Gaza City telling residents to get out for their own safety.
“The Israeli army is operating with very intense force in your area and is determined to dismantle and defeat Hamas,” it read, according to the Times of Israel.
“For your safety, evacuate immediately. …You have been warned.”
The IDF says Hamas put military infrastructure inside the residential tower to target Israeli troops, as Israel prepares for a mid-September push into Gaza’s largest city. This was at least the sixth high-rise tied to Hamas that’s been destroyed.
“The hurricane storm continues to strike Gaza,” Defence Minister Israel Katz posted on X, alongside a video that shows the Gaza City high-rise collapse in seconds and a thick plume of black smoke rising into the sky.
The UN estimates about 100,000 Palestinians have fled Gaza City in the past month.
Roughly one million people were believed to be living there before the recent fighting.
