Kenyon College Under Fire for Radical Restroom Policies
A legal watchdog group is up in arms. America First Legal (AFL) says Kenyon College is breaking the law. They claim the school is forcing students to share bathrooms with the opposite sex. That’s not how things are supposed to work under Ohio law.
Ohio’s new bathroom bill is clear. Restrooms and locker rooms must be split by biological sex, not “gender identity.” AFL is calling this a blatant violation. They argue schools should focus on teaching, not pushing radical gender policies.
AFL’s investigation is serious. In a hard-hitting move, they sent letters to Craig Trainor of the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, demanding an investigation of Kenyon College.
As AFL legal counsel Will Scolinos put it, “Ohio law is clear: multi-occupancy restrooms must be designated for either men or women.” He didn’t hold back, adding, “Schools of higher education should focus more on educating students rather than re-educating them into radical gender policies that require students, men and women, to share the same restrooms. It is not normal.”
Kenyon College isn’t staying silent. In a statement, a spokesperson said, “Kenyon fully complies with all state and federal laws.” The college insists it works hard to ensure no one faces discrimination or harassment—and they’re ready to work with the DOE and Ohio Attorney General to sort out concerns.
Yet the laws are on the side of common sense. Ohio legislation, effective since February, mandates that restrooms in universities must be clearly divided by sex. Other schools in Ohio follow this rule for multi-occupancy restrooms. Kenyon, however, justifies its shared restrooms by claiming they aren’t exclusively for student use.
The AFL isn’t buying it. They’ve noted that the college’s policy flies in the face of President Donald Trump’s executive order, “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.” The order makes it clear: the U.S. recognizes only two sexes. It states, “an individual’s immutable biological classification as either male or female [and] is not a synonym for and does not include the concept of ‘gender identity’.”
This issue isn’t about feelings—it’s about facts. With Title IX on the line, the AFL argues that Kenyon’s failure to offer separate restrooms for men and women is a violation of the law. And it doesn’t stop at Kenyon. The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is already investigating similar issues in other institutions, like Denver Public Schools.
In a strong statement last month, AFL’s Trainor warned, “Let me be clear: it is a new day in America, and under President Trump, OCR will not tolerate discrimination of any kind.”
The controversy is a flashpoint in a broader attack on woke policies. Critics say that under the Trump administration, federal agencies like the DOE will work hard to dismantle Biden-era DEI initiatives. And this isn’t just about bathrooms—it’s about upholding the rule of law and returning to common-sense policies that protect our cultural values.
Clearly, the debate is far from over. As investigations ramp up, Kenyon College will need to do more than just claim legal compliance. When tradition, accountability, and the law are on the line, there’s no place for radical policies that defy what Ohio’s law has clearly set forth.
