Police investigate two fatal stabbings on Long Island

Two women were killed hours apart

Authorities on Long Island are investigating the deaths of two women they say were stabbed by 22-year-old Rony Yahir Alvarenga Rivera. Police say one victim was his 42-year-old coworker, Ana Maria del Aguila-Cordova, who was found dead outside a Wendy’s on Austin Boulevard in Island Park after midnight while taking out the garbage. The second victim was his 32-year-old roommate, who investigators say was found dead at her home on West Mineola Avenue in Valley Stream later that morning. Police said both women were killed by multiple stab wounds to the neck and torso. Del Aguila-Cordova, from Long Beach, leaves behind two young children, ages eight and one.

Detectives say the suspect called police himself

Investigators describe a scene of anger

Police said the case took another turn when Alvarenga Rivera contacted authorities and said he had stabbed someone. Det. Lt. George Darienzo of the Nassau County homicide unit said officers later encountered him at a location in Lynbrook, where he again told police he had killed somebody that night. Police Chief Patrick Ryder said the crime scenes suggested a man acting in a fit of rage, and Darienzo summarized the apparent motive in one word: anger. Investigators have not released a fuller explanation, which is often how these cases go when the public wants answers and the paperwork prefers to linger.

Immigration history becomes part of the case

Charges now include first and second degree murder

Police said Alvarenga Rivera came into the United States illegally from El Salvador in 2016, when he was 12 years old. Barack Obama was president at the time. He has been charged with first degree and second degree murder and has pleaded not guilty. The case now moves into the court system, where prosecutors will have to prove intent, the defense will try to narrow the facts, and the families of the victims are left to live with the damage. That is the part the press releases never quite capture.
