Hegseth Backs Off on Kid Rock Flyby

Army Pulls Back

The Army first suspended the aircrew after a Saturday flyby of two AH-64 Apache helicopters near Kid Rock’s Nashville-area home. By Tuesday night, Pete Hegseth said the pause was over. The switch flipped fast enough to make a bureaucracy sweat, which is saying something. Hegseth posted that the pilots were lifted from suspension, with “No punishment. No investigation.” That is not the language of a careful review. It is the language of a decision that got a phone call and moved on.

Trump Weighs In

President Trump was asked about the episode on Fox News and said the pilots probably should not have done it, but he would take a look. He also joked that if the crew liked Kid Rock, he liked Kid Rock. The timing mattered. Hegseth’s reversal came within an hour, which suggests the military chain of command can still move fast when politics enters the room. The paperwork people must have felt a chill run down their staplers.

Kid Rock Says It Was A Surprise

Kid Rock, whose legal name is Robert Ritchie, posted video of the flyby and later told WKRN-TV he had invited crews to “cruise by” after seeing helicopters pass his place before. He said the Saturday pass was not planned and caught him off guard. He also said he expected the pilots would be fine because his “buddy is commander-in-chief.” He has also done USO tours for troops overseas, so this was not exactly a random celebrity photo op. For the curious, the clips and older USO footage are below.
