Floodwater covering a road in Oahu, Hawaii during severe storms

Hawaii Floods Spark Dam Fears

Floodwaters Overwhelm Oahu

Heavy rain turned parts of Oahu into a rescue zone on Friday, with emergency crews pulling more than 230 people to safety in the first 24 hours. Officials said the flooding was the worst on the island in about 20 years, which is not the kind of milestone anyone wants to see on a weather report. Roads closed, neighborhoods filled with water, and responders worked through the night as repeated rain bands kept the danger level high. Hawaii Governor Josh Green said the National Guard was activated to help local crews handle the flood response.

Evacuations Ordered Near Dam

The biggest alarm came from the Wahiawa Dam in northern Oahu, where emergency managers warned of possible imminent failure. That warning led authorities to order the evacuation of about 5,500 residents in Waialua and Haleʻiwa. Officials also urged people to follow shelter instructions and leave immediately, which is sensible advice when a dam starts making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The order was meant to get people out before the situation got worse, not after the water had already made the decision for them.

Rescues Continue As Storms Stay Active

Authorities said the Hawaii National Guard, Honolulu Fire Department, and other crews airlifted more than 70 children and adults from a youth camp on Oahu’s west coast after they were trapped by rising water. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said the emergency response had already reached life-threatening conditions, while Gov. Green said there were no confirmed deaths or missing persons at the time of the latest briefing. The National Weather Service kept a flash flood warning in place overnight, and forecasters said more rain could hit through Saturday, with the Big Island expected to see heavier rain later. In a state used to dealing with storms, this one still managed to throw the usual playbook into the floodwater.
