Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) raised eyebrows by attacking Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy (no relation) while speaking with reporters earlier this week.
The remarks came ahead of a contentious Senate hearing on Thursday, where the Trump appointee sparred with just about every Democrat on the panel. Democrats — all of whom backed policies like “15 days to slow the spread” and indefinite masking during the COVID-19 pandemic — repeatedly attacked Kennedy as “out of touch” and unqualified for his shifting of focus towards combatting the chronic disease epidemic.
While speaking with reporters, Kennedy claimed that RFK Jr. has not done enough to restore faith in public health following the pandemic. “And so far, I don’t see where Secretary Kennedy has done that. All I see over there is, at the moment, is a multiple vehicle pileup,” he said.
“I’m not saying that Secretary Kennedy is wrong or right. I’m not a medical doctor. I’m not qualified to say. I’m just saying that when I met with Bobby in my office, I told him, I said, ‘your job number one is to restore the confidence of the American people and the institution of public health in America.’ And so far, he hasn’t done that. All I see is chaos.”
The senator appeared to be speaking in reference to sweeping changes at the CDC, as well as tweaks to the nation’s vaccine schedule. In an opinion piece published in the Wall Street Journal, Secretary Kennedy defended his shifts in focus at the agency and decisions to cut staffing by pointing to redundant bureaucracy within the department.
He argued that the organization’s “dysfunction” was responsible for “irrational policy” during the Covid pandemic, leading to a disproportionately large number of deaths recorded in the US compared with the global average.
“This failure was no anomaly,” he added, accusing the CDC of having “presided over rising chronic disease” – which he called “a true modern pandemic.”
