Dallas Police Close 52 Year Cold Case Delivering Justice and Closure in the Oldest Missing Person Case in Texas

Cold Case Cracked After 50 Years: Dallas Teen Identified

It seemed like just another unsolved mystery. Back in 1973, Norman Prater vanished into thin air, leaving the Dallas Police Department chasing shadows. But today? The shadows have cleared, thanks to a relentless pursuit of truth. They’ve finally closed a chapter that’s been open for over five decades.

Norman Prater was last seen on January 14, 1973. Fast forward a few months to July 9th, a tragic hit-and-run on Highway 35 in Rockport, Texas, left a man unknown and unnamed. The connection to Prater? Totally missed—until now.

Detective Ryan Dalby, with fresh eyes and a fresh drive, took another look. Piecing together details that others might have brushed aside, Dalby pushed forward. His efforts unveiled a photograph, unearthed by Aransas County Medical Examiner’s Office. This photo, much like a missing puzzle-piece, found its way to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children before landing in Dalby’s hands.

Skip forward a bit, add a forensic analyst from the Texas Rangers to the mix, and bingo—Prater was linked to that hit-and-run victim. But to seal the deal, Dalby reached out to Prater’s brother, Isaac. The confirmation wasn’t through DNA; it was through good old face-to-face identification and analysis. Prater’s disappearance had an answer: he was the 16-year-old victim from the 1973 accident.

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux echoed sentiments of dedication and resolution. Detective Dalby, through his grit and determination, handed the Prater family the closure they had long sought. This resolution stands as a testament to the Dallas Police Department’s commitment to the cases we pursue and the families we serve, no matter how much time has passed, he expressed.

Closure doesn’t erase the pain, but it sure closes out an agonizing wait. The Dallas Police Department’s heartfelt thoughts go out to the Prater family. The past may never change, but understanding it can finally bring peace.
