Alina Habba Steps Down as US Attorney for New Jersey
On Monday, Alina Habba announced her resignation as the US Attorney for the District of New Jersey. This came after the Third Circuit Court of Appeals held up her disqualification. But don’t think for a second she’s backing down. She’s sticking around in the Justice Department, shifting gears to a new role.
Habba, a Trump nominee loyal to her cause, declared, “For four years, I fought against lawfare aimed at President Trump and against politics infecting our justice system.” She’s clear that her loyalty is to the country, not some title or ZIP code. Bold words!
The court’s ruling might have pushed her out of one role, but she’s not waving the white flag. She’ll be taking on a new role as Senior Advisor to the Attorney General for US Attorneys and promises that the decision won’t weaken her resolve or the Justice Department. Strong words for sure.
How did we get here? Back in August, US District Judge Mathew Brann, an Obama pick, said Habba wasn’t lawfully holding the office. Pressure from Democrat Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to oust her didn’t help, nor did a summer of pressure from federal judges to not extend her term.
But she outmaneuvered them—until now. The Third Circuit Court didn’t budge and upheld the ruling. No more interim or acting, she’s stepping aside.
So, what’s next for Habba? Well, for sure, she’s not disappearing. Her fight, as she puts it, “will now stretch across the country.” Game on!
What a twist and turn of political drama. Stay tuned as this unfolds! Keep an eye out; anything can happen in this wild justice saga.
